Wrangell St. Elias National Park (June 2024)

We spent three nights in the center of Wrangell St. Elias National Park at the Kennecott Glacier Lodge.  Wrangell St. Elias National Park is America’s largest national park. It is larger than Vermont and New Hampshire combined.  It includes nine of the sixteen tallest peaks in America.

Kennecott, located in the center of the park, was a large copper mine in the early 1900’s.  It is located next to the terminal end of the Kennecott Glacier.  The view of the glacier from the hotel looks like piles of rock, but it is actually a five foot layer of rock on a 1500’ thick glacier.  The glacier was 300’ higher in the early 1900’s when the mine was active.

Here is a photo of 14,000’ Mount Wrangell which is an active shield volcano.
