Badlands National Park


We had a wonderful stay in the Badlands. Great scenery, lots of wildlife, wonderful sunrises and sunsets, beautiful starry skies.

This is a lazy man's blog post. I'll let Donna Sue do the interesting writing. I'll just provide you with a link to some pictures.

Our next stop was Chippokes Plantation State Park on the James River in Virginia.  Spent two days at Colonial Williamsburg and one at Berkeley Plantation. Temps were in the high 90's so we explored at a very slow pace. Thank goodness we had electricity at the campground so we could use the AC on the camper. Lava Beds National Monument and Lassen Volcanic National Park

We arrived at Lava Beds National Monument on July 28.  Lava Beds National Monument is on the northeast side of Medicine Lake Volcano, the largest shield volcano in the United States.  A shield volcano is a type of volcano named for its low profile, resembling a warrior's shield lying on the ground. It is formed by the eruption of highly fluid lava, which travels farther and forms thinner flows than the more viscous lava erupted from a stratovolcano.  At Lava Beds there are numerous cinder cones and over 80 lava tubes that were formed when Medicine Lake Volcano was active.  Lava tubes are caves that were formed while the lava was flowing.  The outside surface of the lava in contact with air would cool and harden while the lava below continued to flow. South Rim of the Grand Canyon and Havasu Falls

Near the end of our stay at Lake Powell we were notified that our trip to Phantom Ranch in the bottom of the Grand Canyon was canceled because the National Park Service would to be flying supplies into the canyon via helicopter and they would not allow any mule trips into that canyon while they were doing that.  So we had to do some revisions to our plan.  Donna Sue suggested that I look into the possibility of getting reservations at the lodge in Supai village near Havasu Falls.  It seemed like a long shot, but it came through.  But first we went to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Then we headed to a campground near the road to the Havasupai Indian Reservation.  The next morning we got up bright and early and headed to the parking lot at the top of the 8 mile trail down to Supai Village where we would spend the next three nights.  I think we got started down around 10am and we made it to the village around 4pm very tired and sore.
