Badlands National Park


We had a wonderful stay in the Badlands. Great scenery, lots of wildlife, wonderful sunrises and sunsets, beautiful starry skies.

This is a lazy man's blog post. I'll let Donna Sue do the interesting writing. I'll just provide you with a link to some pictures.

Our next stop was Chippokes Plantation State Park on the James River in Virginia.  Spent two days at Colonial Williamsburg and one at Berkeley Plantation. Temps were in the high 90's so we explored at a very slow pace. Thank goodness we had electricity at the campground so we could use the AC on the camper. Oliver Lee Memorial State Park

Our next stop was Oliver Lee Memorial State Park near White Sands National Park.  We arrived on March 16. White Sands National Park Three Rivers Petroglyph Site near near Tularosa, NM.  There are over 21,000 petroglyphs at this location. Lava Beds National Monument and Lassen Volcanic National Park

We arrived at Lava Beds National Monument on July 28.  Lava Beds National Monument is on the northeast side of Medicine Lake Volcano, the largest shield volcano in the United States.  A shield volcano is a type of volcano named for its low profile, resembling a warrior's shield lying on the ground. It is formed by the eruption of highly fluid lava, which travels farther and forms thinner flows than the more viscous lava erupted from a stratovolcano.  At Lava Beds there are numerous cinder cones and over 80 lava tubes that were formed when Medicine Lake Volcano was active.  Lava tubes are caves that were formed while the lava was flowing.  The outside surface of the lava in contact with air would cool and harden while the lava below continued to flow.
